President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, participated in the 10th meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council (SEEC) on Wednesday in Moscow, Russia, urging countries to join the Ashgabat Agreement on the creation of the International Transport Corridor, reports the Kazakh President's press service.
"For accessing the markets of the Persian Gulf, we propose to the member states of the Economic Union, Kazakhstan is already doing this, to join the Ashgabat Agreement on the creation of the International Transport Corridor," noted the Kazakh leader.
The meeting was attended by Armenian Prime Minister and SEEC Chair Nikol Pashinyan, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, Kyrgyzstan President Sadyr Japarov, Russian President Vladimir Putin, as well as heads of observer states: Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Cuban President Miguel Mario Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, along with the CIS Executive Secretary Sergey Lebedev and the Chairman of the Board of the Eurasian Economic Commission Bakytzhan Sagintayev.
According to the statement, the heads of states discussed the main tasks and key directions of further cooperation within the Eurasian Economic Union.
The Ashgabat Agreement is a multimodal transport agreement between the governments of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran, India, Pakistan, and Oman for creating an international transport-transit corridor facilitating the transportation of goods between Central Asia and the Persian Gulf. The agreement entered into force in April 2016. Turkmenistan is the depositary state of the agreement.
